Near midnight on a late summer evening in Brooklyn, a 40-year-old man was crossing a street, but never made it across. He was hit by a passing vehicle and thrown under a nearby parked car while the driver went on to allegedly strike six other vehicles and injure three other people. The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
Police held and questioned a local man in connection with the accident, but he was released from custody after charges were voided. It was not clear why he was released and why the charges did not hold.
In cases like this, bringing a personal injury action may assist in helping a surviving victim or his or her family to move forward. Life can change in an instant at the hands of a negligent driver. If this happens, a personal injury attorney can help the injured person or his or her family respond.

A personal injury lawsuit can provide compensation to those who survive but are injured or relatives who lose a loved one in these kinds of car accidents. By seeking damages, victims can protect their rights to recover for the harm caused by a negligent driver. The recent tragic accident in Brooklyn reminds us that money damages cannot heal injuries or bring back a lost loved one, but can offer some measure of closure during the difficult time after a car crash.
Pedestrian deaths and injuries are not only a problem in New York City. Nationally, the numbers have been rising sharply in recent months.
