WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN HIRING AN ATTORNEY
The first thing to look for in an attorney is honesty. Next, it is crucial to have a rapport with your attorney. You should feel that the attorney is open to your questions and can answer them. You should determine whether the law firm has the experience and ability to handle the type of case that you have and that they have the financial capability to spend whatever is necessary to prove the case on your behalf.
THE TIME LIMIT FOR YOUR INJURY
How long ago did your injury occur? The statutes of limitations define the deadlines by which you must file a claim related to an injury. Every state has its own set of time limits. In New York, the time to file a lawsuit in many but not all types of personal injury cases is three years from the date of the occurrence.
Some claims also require notice filings within a time as short as 90 days. While there are exceptions where the time to start a lawsuit may be extended such as injuries to minors and incapacitated persons, you need to know the deadline for filing your claims. If too much time has passed, the law will prevent you from receiving any compensation at all.
